Title : Effective Diameter of an N + 1-mirror Segmented Telescope

Description:We determine the equivalent aperture diameter of a segmented telescope composed of N identical mirrors (f=300mm). The segmented mirrors are configured such that the foci of all the mirrors coincide with the mirror at the origin. Aberrations due this configuration are corrected using the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm. We retrieve the phase at which we can match the performance of the monolithic mirror and evaluated the resulting point spread function (PSF) using the Linfoot’s criteria of merit as a function of the effective diameter, kDo, where Do is the diameter of the single segment and k is a value from 0.25 to 4. We use N = 7 mirror segments with a single mirror added (N+1) to the array in order to determine the effect of additional elements that produce asymmetry to the system. The technique presented was able to correct for the aberrations, improving the imaging resolution of the segmented telescope. The angular resolution is dependent only on the size of the mirror segment (k = 1) but the use of many segments increased the light gathering power of the telescope. With the increased light gathering power of the telescope, it can be used to detect near earth objects (NEOs) via occultation. By examining the light distribution throughout the occultation, it is possible to observe an occultation of a star by a NEO as long as the telescope can detect the light coming from the occulted object (star).
