Description: Astronomers have been hunting for stars that formed in the early history of the universe for decades. These stars formed before many heavy elements had formed and their composition provides clues about the star formation history and nucleosynthesis in the early universe. In this podcast, Dr. Timothy Beers describes the discovery of the current oldest known star in the universe.

Bio: Rob Sparks is a science education specialist in the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) group at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) and works on the Galileoscope project (www.galileoscope.org), providing design, dissemination and professional development. He blogs at halfastro.wordpress.com.

Dr. Timothy Beers is a former director of Kitt Peak National Observatory and currently an astronomer at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, Arizona. His primary research interests are ancient metal-poor stars and the formation of the Milky Way galaxy.
