Description: Dark skies sites are increasingly rare as the world becomes more urbanized and more nighttime lights are installed.  Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory’s Malcom Smith has long been interested in preserving dark skies. He is currently working with the United Nations Education, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to establish Dark Skies Heritage Sites in Hawaii, northern Chile and the Hawaiian Islands. In this podcast, Malcom Smith describes the history of these efforts and their current status.

Bio: Rob Sparks is a science education specialist in the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) group at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) and works on the Galileoscope project (www.galileoscope.org), providing design, dissemination and professional development. He blogs at halfastro.wordpress.com.

Malcom Smith is currently an Astronomer at CTIO with some special responsibilities (at local and international level) for controlling light pollution and for Public Affairs and Educational Outreach.
