Observing in the Namibian Desert with Mark Radice on Episode 456 of the Actual Astronomy podcast. I’m Chris and joining me is Shane. We are amateur astronomers who love looking up at the night sky and this podcast is for everyone who enjoys going out under the stars.
Welcome back to the show Mark,
Let’s do a quick background to catch listeners up.
You host the Refreshing Views Youtube Channel and usually describe yourself as an observer in the UK but today you elsewhere.
What are you doing in Namibia?
How long are you there for?
What is the latitude / altitude?
What equipment did you take?
What equipment is there?
What is the observing like there?
What have you been observing?
What guides did you take?
Andrew sent us a recommendation:
Hi Guys,
I was just listening to episode 455 and listener Larry was looking for some southern targets. Just wanted to suggest a handy book, Atlas of the Southern Night Sky. Hartungs is a great resource but maybe a bit too exhaustive to use in the field, especially if you’re using binoculars or a small scope in unfamiliar skies. This one has charts for each constellation and short descriptions for the brightest DSOs and doubles stars. Not sure what availability is like outside of Australia but I’m sure it can be found online.
Clear Skies,
Andrew
What are the animals like?
What did your family say when you told them you were heading there?
Thanks for joining us Mark!
