Description:

In this week’s episode, we take a deep dive into how a planet (in this case Earth) is constructed! We are joined by Dr. Eugene Grosch who is a geologist and petrologist at Rhodes University in South Africa. Eugene discusses his work on some of the oldest rocks in the country and what we can learn from them.

We learn about how precious metals and diamonds are created and moved through the Earth’s crust. We also discuss how planets create the building blocks for life, and how life, in turn, helps to create the minerals we find on Earth!

Bio: Dr Jacinta Delhaize and Dr Daniel Cunnama are astronomers based in Cape Town, South Africa. Jacinta is a Research Fellow at the University of Cape Town. She spends her time using huge radio telescopes to study gas and black holes in distant galaxies. Daniel is the Science Engagement Astronomer at the South African Astronomical Observatory. He likes to use large supercomputers to create simulations of galaxies. Both Jacinta and Daniel love to promote the incredible astronomy happening across the African continent.

Dr Eugene Grosch is a geologist and petrologist at Rhodes University in South Africa.
