Description:

Kelly Beatty is the former senior editor at Sky & Telescope magazine, having started there in 1974, and
also serving as editor of Night Sky, the magazine’s publication for beginning stargazers. Although semi-
retired now, Kelly still remains involved in articles, tours and other projects. He is also heavily involved
with light pollution, and speaks on this issue whenever he can.

Specializing in planetary science, Kelly created The New Solar System, considered a standard of
reference among planetary scientists. He has been twice honored by the Division for Planetary Sciences
of the AAS.

In 2005 he received the Harold Masursky Award of Meritorious Service, and in 2009 he was honored
with the inaugural Jonathan Eberhart Journalism Award. He is also a recipient of the Astronomical
League Award in 2006 for his contributions to the science of astronomy and the AGU’s Cowen Award for
Sustained Achievement in Science Journalism.

You’ll occasionally hear his interview and guest commentaries on the Weather Channel and NPR, and his
work appears in many journals and magazines. During the 1980s, he was among the first Western
journalists to gain access to the soviet space program. Asteroid 2925 Beatty was named on the occasion
of his marriage in 1983, and in 1986 he was chosen as one of the 100 semifinalists for NASA’s Journalist
in Space program.
