Title: The Apogee Podcast – Sungrazer Comet as Solar Probe

Links: astroandmusic.blogspot.com

Original Paper: http://arxiv.org/abs/1405.1639v1

Description: Cosmic discusses a paper submitted to the Astrophysical Journal that describes using a sungrazing comet (Comet Lovejoy C/2011 W3) as a solar corona probe to better understand the structure and dynamics of the electric and magnetic fields of the corona. While this paper is highly theoretical, it does use data collected by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) to help constrain various models. This is a very good example of the process of science to make an observation and then create theories to begin to understand that observation. Cosmic also invites listeners to participate in a project to measure the distance to the Moon.

Bio: Cosmic is a self- and crowd-funded independent research astronomer and space musician.
