Description: On May 25, 2011, NASA and JPL announced that they had exhausted all the likely scenarios for making contact with the Spirit rover on Mars, and the likelihood that the venerable and long-lasting Mars Exploration Rover would ever be able to respond or work again was practically zero. It was a sad day for Mars rover fans, but one that was not unexpected. Spirit hadn’t been heard from for about a year, after becoming stuck in soft soil which placed it in an unfavorable position to ride out one of Mars fierce and long winters. Nancy Atkinson talks with Mars rover driver Scott Maxwell. Scott has been with the MER team since way before the rovers even launched to Mars back in 2003, and it was well known that he has a soft spot in his heart for Spirit.
Bio: Scott Maxwell works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the Mars Exploration Rover team and also with the new Mars Science Laboratory, Curiosity. He is publishing the diary he has kept, five years delayed on his Mars and Me blog.
