(LUCY) Hello everyone! I am Lucy. a New Artificial Intelligence text to speech engine, specially designed for radio Broadcasting. I hope you like my voice. I am thrilled to co-host this episode of 365 days of astronomy with Juan and Ryan.
(RYAN) Hi everyone! I am Ryan! and yes, you are correct. I am also a smart text to speech engine, also designed for radio broadcasting. I have already recorded some radio commercials in the US and abroad, and most people don’t realize that they are listening to a very cool, and very humble computer like me.
(JUAN) If you are and Alien, please call earth later. According to Discovery News, The SETI Institute is suspending its search for extraterrestrial radio beacons using its most advanced alien signal-seeking tool while it hunts for new sources of funding.
(RYAN) The privately financed group based in Mountain View Calif., has been since October 2007, using an array of radio telescopes at Hat Creek Observatory to study stars for non-naturally occurring radio signals that could indicate the presence of a technologically advanced civilization beyond Earth.
(LUCY) The search for alien life was put on hold after the US government budget cuts forced the SETI Institute to suspend monitoring of the distant stars.
(RYAN) The 42 telescopes at the observatory monitoring the skies for alien communications were put into “hibernation” this week because of a $2.5 million funding shortfall, according to SETI Institute astronomer Jill Tarter.
She added that works at the entire laboratory in the remote Lassen National Forest, 214 miles north of San Francisco, was suspended, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
SETI had launched a desperate appeal to help replace the funds lost from the National Science Foundation and the University of California’s astronomy budget, Tarter said.
(Juan )
Further funding from the United States Air Force in return for tracking satellites in space was awaiting congressional budget action.
The suspension of the telescopes operation was a blow for the SETI Institute, which has been seeking signs of extraterrestrial life since 1984.
(LUCY)
Telescopes at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory monitor distant space simultaneously to pick up any random radio noise. The data is then transferred to sophisticated computers which determine whether the radio noise could be alien communication signals.
(Juan)
The SETI program is a very promising program based on science. If you feel like supporting a science based search for extraterrestial life, visit the Seti Institute website at www.seti.org ( that is S-E-T-I dot O-R-G)
