It’s actually happening! On November 12th, the Philae lander of the Rosetta spacecraft will be the first human-made craft to ever land on a comet. Aren’t you excited?!
Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko will get an other-worldly visiter at what has been designated “Site J” by the Rosetta team on the “smaller lobe” of the comet. (The rubber-ducky’s head.) Since Site J isn’t so terribly descriptive, there will be a public contest to name the site starting October 14.
Rosetta is a multi-national mission involving the European Space Agency and NASA. Here at CosmoQuest, we’ll be tuning into the livestreams for the comet landing for sure!
