Walk on the Moon with Astrobotic and Lunar Mission One

Ok, so, I have to admit, we get a whole lot of “Can you please share” messages here at CosmoQuest, and a whole lot of them get ignored, but this one caught our attention with its creative use of feet.

Yes, you read that right: Feet.

The good folks at Lunar Mission One are raising awareness of their programs (and of the Moon in general) by collecting images of people’s feet. These images will be sent to the moon with the Astrobotic Lander in 2017 as the Pennsylvania-based team competes to win the Google Lunar XPRIZE.

Sending an image of your feet to the Moon is completely free. All you need to do is take a picture and upload it through their web portal. People are also encouraged to share out their images with the hashtag #footsteps. Here is my photo (and my dog, who decided to obscure my feet).

Lunar Mission One is looking to fund a 2024 mission to the moon that will accomplish a series of science goals, including taking a fairly deep drill sample and surveying the moon as a potential site for performing deep space radio astronomy. Their programs are funded independently through a variety of commercial efforts, including selling merchandise and the ability to send various amounts of data to the moon. They also have various membership levels that allow subscribers to receive behind the scenes and exclusive content. This model is a good partner to Astrobotics MoonMail, which allows people to pay to send small mementoes to the Moon.
