Today’s news starts with one more job that has been taken over by the machines. Now, while I for one welcome our future robot overlords, this kind of news may disrupt a bunch of researchers. In a press release coming to us out of Southwest Research Institute, planetary astrophysicist Dr Natalie Hinkel has announced that her team has identified 360 potential giant planet host stars that have more than a 90 percent probability. This was done using the Hypatia star catalog and machine learning. They trained the catalog using stars that have been searched for planets and found to either have them or not have them. That algorithm has now gone off on its own, recommending places to explore like a Netflix “Recommended viewing” algorithm gone wild. Now, we just need to get these algorithms identifying the planets, and we’ll be free to focus on the science instead of the searching.

Now, to return to things a bit closer to home…

I want to remind everyone that we are just a week away from the July 2 Solar Eclipse. For most of the world, this day will be marked by no visible moon – an occurrence we experience pretty much every month. BUT – for some of you, either on cruise ships in the south Pacific or on scattered about South America, the Sun will go dim, and maybe even go dark.

As generally happens, this solar eclipse is paired with a lunar eclipse. This one isn’t entirely exciting. Only part of the moon will turn red on July 16-17.

If you want to see this happen, you need to be in Africa, Europe, or parts of south Asia.

Speaking of Lunar Eclipses….

In today’s news of the “Elon, Why?”, I feel the required to remind everyone that not all red worlds are Mars. In this tweet from June 23, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk grabbed artwork from the internet that showed an eclipsed moon and not, as he must have thought, Mars. This artwork has been traced back to twitter user @Dodiewill2, who tweeted it at @elonmusk in January of this year. It was a parody of SpaceX’s own Occupy Mars campaign. It is still unclear exactly whose photo of a lunar eclipse was used.

Continuing on a SpaceX theme, last night SpaceX once again launched the Falcon Heavy. I’m going to leave most of this story for Annie to talk to you about tomorrow, but there is one amusing highlight I’d like to point out.

The modified yacht they’ve been using to try and catch nosecones *was* called Mr Steven. Well, last night she came out with a new name and new set of pronouns, and Ms Tree was able to catch one of the two fairings like a champ.

I see two lessons learned, if you want to catch a faring, catch like a girl, and everyone does better when called by their proper pronouns.
