Viewing the 2017 Eclipse from Maryland!

Aug 31, 2017 | Behind the Scenes

This post is from Jennifer Grier, one of our CosmoQuest team members from our partner the Planetary Science Institute.

I had the opportunity to view the eclipse with my husband and fellow scientist Andy Rivkin, and fellow PSI scientist Karen Stockstill Cahill, along with about 200 other folks on the lawn at the John’s Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab campus in Maryland. We weren’t in the path of totality, but we saw a partial eclipse here in with about 79% to 80% coverage. It was enough to dramatically cut the amount of sunlight and drop temperatures noticably!

We also enjoyed a festival with music, activities, food, and telescope viewing courtesy of Applied Physics Lab and the APL astronomy club. It was awesome to see so many people enjoying an astronomical event, and to have JHU make a festival of it. We’re now looking forward to the 2024 eclipse event!
