The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) is an international organization whose mission is to increase public science literacy through the study of and participation in astronomy.
The ASP is in the unique position of working with astronomy researchers, amateur enthusiasts and dedicated educators for more than 125 years. We develop engaging demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages, such as:
- “My Sky Tonight” – A program aimed at the youngest stargazers, aged 3-5, interacting with museum educators across the United States.
- “Girl Scout Stars” – Co-creating new “Space Science” badges for Girl Scouts of all levels over the next five years, and creating professional development on how to keep girls’ STEM interests flourishing for the astronomers that work with them.
- “Project ASTRO” – A national program linking professional and amateur astronomers with classroom teachers to bring the excitement of scientific discovery with hands-on, inquiry based activities to over 20,000 students annually.
- “Family Astro” – Geared towards 8-10 year olds and their families, Family ASTRO helps parents and other caregivers take an involved role in their children’s science education, spending time together in active experiments, observations and discussion.
Through the Night Sky Network, we provide outreach toolkits to hundreds of astronomy clubs, inspiring thousands of people of all ages to delight in the night sky and be active scientific thinkers.
The ASP will be creating, field-testing, and maintaining a series of interactive demos that are designed to compliment CosmoQuest’s Citizen Science Portals.
