Some companies don’t just make good products, they also give back to the community. Southern Stars, the company behind Sky Safari planetarium software and the Sky Wire telescope controller for iPhones is one of those companies. During the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, they donated a portion of every Sky Safari sale to IYA2009. In the past 3 years, they’ve continued to innovate their software, adding more features and content as they’ve also improved the interface.
It’s now 2012, and every April we celebrate what we accomplished in 2009 with Global Astronomy Month (GAM). This astronomy celebration, organized by Astronomers without Borders (AWB), includes a whole series of events, and here at CosmoQuest we’re joining in with our Million Crater Challenge. This month, to support AWB and GAM, Southern Stars is once again donating a share to astronomy outreach! If you purchase Sky Safari for your OS X, iOS, or Android device, Southern Skies will donate 30% of the sales to AWB.
We don’t generally plug products around here, and when we do it’s either because we truly like them, or because buying them will help something good happen. This is one of those rare moments when both are true. I’ve had Sky Safari on my phone since IYA2009, and while it’s not the only planetarium software on my phone, it is my go-to software for looking things up.
If you’re looking to try out some new software for your phone (iOS or Android) or OS X computer, consider doing it now. Look up, learn about what your seeing on your mobile (or OS X) device, and do some good for AWB.
