Description: One of the most important steps in science analysis is data validation. In observational environments, this may mean having two observatories document the same supernova, or using observations of standard stars to place asteroid measurements on a standard magnitude system. Regardless of how data validation is achieved, it typically requires the standardizing of data and comparing measurements across multiple programs. In citizen science where the data used are obtained by amateur astronomers and other volunteers, data validation has the added complexity of combining data acquired by different individuals as well as systematically accounting for common errors that arise. In this presentation, we examine how the CosmoQuest citizen science platform validates image annotations submitted by volunteers. We review strategies for combining data from multiple people, ways to identify common errors that must be cleansed from the data, and techniques for comparing expert data with volunteer data.
