Magnetars has the record of the strongest magnetic fields of any object. How magnetars form and produce such colossal magnetic fields remains a mystery.
May 15th: Kilonovae
In 2017, astronomers detected the gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation from colliding neutron stars. This had been long theorized as one of the causes of a certain type of gamma-ray burst. By studying the event and its afterglow, astronomers have learned a tremendous amount about the formation of the heaviest elements in the Universe.
Apr 7th: Metal-rich Star. Parents Being Sought
A ninth-magnitude star in our neighborhood of the Milky Way has been found to contain 65 different elements, including large proportions of heavier elements like gold. This star required either a supernova or a neutron star merger to form.
Mar 11th: The First Kilonova Progenitor
Kilonova form when two neutron stars collide. They were first discovered by their gravitational wave emissions. Today we discuss about the discovery of a system that will become a kilonova in the future.
Aug 13th: The Origins Of Castaway Gamma Ray-Bursts
Short gamma ray bursts are caused by the merger of two neutron stars. However, not all short gamma-ray bursts are associated with galaxies. In this podcast, Brendan O’connor, described recent research into the host galaxies of short gamma-ray bursts.
Apr 8th: Archaeology of Space: The ISS Archaeological Project with Dr. Justin P. Walsh
This week, @WSHCrew discuss with Dr. Justin Walsh about the archaeology of space. Wait.. WHAT??? You read it correctly. And also news update regarding Amazon by all the flights, neutron stars becoming black holes and more at #365DaysOfAstro
Aug 16th: Famous Stars
This week we’re going to talk about famous stars. We’re talking about those hot balls of plasma across the distant Universe. #365DyasOfAstro
Jul 14th: Two Neutron Star/Black Hole Mergers Detected
About 900 million miles away in two different galaxies, a black hole & a neutron star merged, and their gravitational waves have been detected here on Earth. #365DaysOfAstro
Jan 5th: What Are Neutron Stars, White Dwarfs & Black Holes?
What is a white dwarf? What is a neutron star? What is a black hole? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!
Aug 20th: Free-flowing Water On Ancient Mars? Not So Fast!
Join us today as we talk about newly released research that suggests the waters on ancient Mars were subglacial and not free-flowing. Also, a black hole goes dormant and star formation goes wild.
