Created by French astronomer Charles Messier in the 18th Century to help him find more comets, this catalogue is the most helpful list of the brightest and easiest to find galaxies, star clusters, nebulae and even starts with an SNR, a supernova remnant. This makes it the catalogue of objects for anyone with their first telescope or pair of binoculars.
Aug 25th: Wobbling Star Produces The Fastest Nova Ever Discovered
Observations of V1674 Hercules reveal a nova produced by the white dwarf star that dimmed in only one day. Additionally, the strange star wobbles every 501 seconds, producing flashes in visible and X-ray light.
Aug 24th: An Ancient Merry-Go-Round
There is evidence of rotation in a galaxy which existed just 500 million years after the Big Bang. This is the earliest galaxy we’ve found with possible rotation! This young galaxy rotates more slowly than modern galaxies, but maybe it’s on its way to gaining more speed.
