Description: Massive datasets are revolutionizing the field of astronomy. As the Human Genome Project did for biomedical research, recent and upcoming surveys of the sky such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope are producing torrents of data for unprecedented numbers of stars, galaxies, and planets, revolutionizing our understanding of the Universe on many scales. I will describe this “big data” revolution in astronomy, and give specific examples focusing on my team’s recent discovery of “singing stars” which enable astronomers to discover and characterize exoplanets like never before.
