Weekly Science Hour: Exploration Day

Oct 3, 2012 | Uncategorized

Looking through most nations holiday calendars there is very little celebration of modern scientific exploration. Sure, we have Yuri’s night, but that’s not a nationally observed holiday. When we comes to sanctioned holidays, mostly we just see celebrations of social advancement – days celebrating men ranging from Martin Luther King to Ceasar Chavez to Abraham Lincoln to Christopher Columbus…. um, wait. One of those individuals is not like the other ones. More on that in a minute. To many Christopher Columbus doesn’t represent exploration and discovery as much as he represents conquest and racism. A new movement is working to change this holiday into one that celebrates scientific exploration and they are fighting to transform Columbus Day into Exploration Day.

Check out their website to learn more and join us at 4pm Pacific / 7pm Eastern for our Google+ Science Hour where we talk with them about what they’re working to accomplish.
