Description: Join Marty Quinn as he introduces CRaTER Live, a new, free Internet Radio Station where users around the world can listen to cosmic rays hitting the Moon, both from deep space, and as result of coronal mass ejections from the Sun. CRaTER Live presents data counts per second from the six cosmic ray detectors that form the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation instrument on board NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or LRO mission. LRO orbits the moon every two hours, and sends data related to the six detectors every second back to Earth through NASA’s space communications network. That means that CRaTER receives live data for 60 minutes, then replays that data for the next 60 minutes while CRaTER goes behind the moon and loses communication in the process. The data is encoded so that small solar events, as well as large solar storm events alter the music pitches that play the detector counts in dramatic ways, changing instruments and scales as cosmic ray counts increase. In the twenty minute introduction to CRaTER Live, Quinn will introduce the sonification design so listeners will be able to decode the sounds for themselves, and discuss various options to listen on the web, or on your mobile device 24 hours a day. Quinn will be joined by members of the CRaTER team, as well as visually impaired students from St Lucy Day School for the Blind in Philadelphia.
