It would probably be better if it included the full head of the astronaut, with full transparency outside so the icon is basically Phil Plait the astronaut's severed head with the visor reflecting a moonscape and the UT rocket on it.

here's a 16*16 one from that old b&w film, with the rocket in the moon's face.

That would be the best solution in my opinion, given the absence of a real BAUT logo and the size constraints. Iīve seen this implementation in a variety of sites. Grapesī 'blue moon' suggestion would also be good.

I've added a 16x16 version to my previous post, but weirdly, the blue moon and the BA/UT one are showing up slightly different sizes for me. They both should be the same size.

I'm used to the vBulletin icon. Can't we just convince every other vB forum to change theirs instead?

I'm a fan of simple icons; I don't like trying to shove pictures of photos into 16x16. Here's a few samples I made up in Gimp.

Favicon sounds like a science fiction convention.

    Carry on.

Technology Review site uses only the initials on the favicon.

At 16x16, more than a couple letters are difficult to read--or, at least, difficult to make look decent. I've tried a lot of different permutations, even just using B and U together.

ETA: Here's the TR icon, they push the 16x16 to the edge, horizontally

Yeah. Itīs funny how the default icon looks big, after you get used to it [well, thatīs true for all favicons].

ETA: Frog marchīs idea of superimposing the letters to the Moon is ok, too [but iīd like it in color - blue]

it wasn't really the moon; it was just the letters themselves eclipsing light from behind them.

    tinted blue, anyhoo

That shows the difficulty in telling details on favicons.

Any better? (Sorry Frog, art is about stealing other people's work! Mwahaha!)

I also did one yesterday in red, with an orbit-like swoosh though it's hard to tell that's what it is.

Nice job, readable, but it takes a little work. Just scanning, they look like a square of color. I like the symbolic meaning of the blue moon much better.

The initials BA UT are a little goofy though, so that appeals to me. When it was first announced, I think the announcement included the thought that there might be an effort to find a better name. I'm pretty sure we're staying with this one.

In a flyer for the Dish Network that came a week ago or so, some 50 different
channels are represented by their logos. I noticed that the only one which
did not have at least something distinctive about the typography was the
NASA channel. I thought at the time I saw it, "They could at least have used
the worm." Although the bold, black, Futura acronym is no less recognizeable
for not having any unique style. But BAUT isn't NASA.

I tried to make a favicon for my website a few years ago. I wanted an image
of the whole Earth, but the best I could do was just a blue dot.

"I find astronomy very interesting, but I wouldn't if I thought we
were just going to sit here and look." -- "Van Rijn"

"The other planets? Well, they just happen to be there, but the
point of rockets is to explore them!" -- Kai Yeves

But was it a pale blue dot?
Everything I need to know I learned through Googling.

That's the problem with BAUT. I'd be much clearer and easier to just make the logo with a single letter, like "B". But since BAUT is really BAd astronomy + Universe Today, you can't pick a single letter without excluding half the site's ownership.

"BU" works slightly better, but I wasn't sure newcomers would get it.
