    Is this fad dead yet?

Avengers Assemble was not only a lame movie, but the 3D was absolutely awful. I couldn't tell what was going on half the time. I even took the glasses off for a not unsizeable portion of the film as the double vision was preferable. Never again. I'm only seeing 2D movies from now on. Pay extra to have the film look worse? No thank you.

The 3D craze is the second most awful thing the studios have forced on us (the first being DVD regions).

I really liked that movie, but you have to remember that it wasn't filmed in 3D. When I do see a movie in 3D (which is much more rare than it used to be), I only see movies which were filmed in 3D. Paying for post-conversion just encourages them.

I like 3D. I even got a 3D a couple months ago. I want to experiment in 3D photography, but until I get a stereoscopic camera, I'm gonna use the cha-cha method.

I think the past two years have told us all we need to know about the future of 3D cinema: that it will be retained for expected (or hyped) blockbusters to pump up revenues, while the vast majority of films will remain 2D.

A few days ago, I watched both John Carter of Mars and Hugo in 3D on a Blu-ray equipped 55" tv. John Carter's 3D was mediocre but Hugo's was spectacular. You'll want to find the optimal distance from the screen for best effect.

Another good thing about 3D TV is the ability to watch two shows at the same time and play split screen games at full screen at the same time without the other guy being able to see your view. Newer game consoles are being coded to adapt this to avoid view distortion, but it can be done without it if you don't mind the distortion. It's easier to do with passive 3D now but active 3D will be able to do it with updates or new hardware.

It's more about VR, but John Carmack covers a lot of the flaws with current 3D technology. Actually, he covers just about all there is to know about 3D technology in this 17 minute interview.
