Hi, For young people, social networks are a much expanded school /social
world, and unfortunately there is'nt any risk of your personal reputation if you spout lies. They just change their names. Hard to spearate reality from
    fiction.
For some kids, it's just an expansion of the penpal world.
We don't know what lessons they learn , good and bad.
By the way, A hearty welcome to you, Jaixin. I hope that you enjoy this site and meet and make new friends and find new and interesting concepts on this board. They are a fine and extraordinary bunch which you shall find interesting. Again, welcome.
    Best regards,
    Dan

One of them is that technology makes bullying even easier.

It's a way of meeting like-minded people, with all the dangers and possibilities that opens.
Good: Outsiders that think they're alone can see they're not.
Bad: Outsiders that think they're alone can see they're not (and become extremists).

I've read an interesting article about "Generation Y" today. It characterised my generation as "wanting to be exploited" in the way that everyone has to have their 15 minutes of fame and be "rated" by others (e.g. by a video on youtube, reality show audition, or by having a lot of followers on a social networking site) or they don't exist.
I think this quite hits the mark, and I do think social networks have something to do with that. It has come up in a conversation with my friend about Facebook before:
So Friend A travels around the world for a project. Friend B does a project/collection for a good cause. Friend C develops open source in her free time, and Friend D has 100 followers on her blog. And we want to do everything at once, so we're as good as them.

    Sound familiar?

I think social networking was a good idea but it developed into facebookitis. It's a socially devastating condition, usually triggered by a person putting up an utterly random moment they had through the day and actually get responses. The first noticable symptom is when said person begins with just announcing what they plan to do with their day; "off to work" "Home from work" "going to bed". As the disease progresses vicitims find themselves unable to resist the urge to continuously log on, throughout the day, posting mundane tasks; "just did the laundry" "about to do the dishes" and lately dominating my entire page "go Yankees!" There is no cure beyond the "I have to take every personality quiz available" phase. By this point the patient has become diluted into believing that their co-conversator is enthralled in their droning on about the latest enlighting personality quiz results and that everyone, infact, does sit around and ponder their banal tasks, throughout the day.

Well I'm old and as a member of Fathers Against Radical Teens I object to social networking! Next thing you know it will lead to mingling!

Honestly, I find it difficult to distinguish between the effects of social networking sites (all of which are fairly young) versus Internet usage in general, going back to the mid 90's onward.

I don't think it's good or bad. It changes the rules, yes, for good guys, bad guys, and the simply misinformed. But then, technology is always changing the rules; the kids freaking their parents in 2009 by how they use Twitter and Myspace will the adults fretting about their own kids in 2035 over the terrible perils of the latest gadgetry. It's just one more thing to adapt to.

This, I totally agree with; though Internet networking doesn't make people narcissistic, it can certainly stoke any existing flaw to egomaniacal proportions. That a site like Twitter exists at all exemplifies it ("I'm totally waiting in line at Jack the Box right now! LOLLERZ!").

Don! You've Kippled? And you admit it?

I have a teenager on my Facebook friends list. My cousin's kid. (Actually, I think I have a couple of cousins' kids, but he's the one who posts most often.) I haven't seen him since he was about four, and I never say anything directly to him, but he's on my front page most often of all my relatives. And the thing is, a lot of what he says is more sensible than what a lot of my old school friends say. Of course, Mom--who talks to him at family gatherings--thinks he's a pretty together kid. And now, I know he wants to work behind the camera, not in front of it, and go to film school.

As I see it, kids are reading and writing more. Social networking will have a positive impact on language skills [however marginal that impact may be]. As for moral formation, values and such, I think it is irrelevant.

I'm typing with only my left hand because I'm holding (like a baby) our 6-7 month old kitten/cat Moses who was neutered yesterday. He is making bread on my face and drooling. Quite adorable.

Anyway, let the kids/adults have at it, as long as they keep their profiles set to private and aren't posting personal information and inappropriate pictures. My daughter's facebook is used primarily to keep in touch with family and other students.

I'd never heard any of those; the reference in question is an old music hall joke, I believe.

Hi, Good attitude. And social networks, like our cats aren't going away.
You can be a friendly guide, and a sounding board which young people will
need from time to time. Cybespace is a relatively new ocean, and those of us who sail it must learn to navigate it and share our experience and wisdom
    in that enterprise.
Oh... and wait untill your kitty gets to be 12 pounds like mine. He is quite fond of jumping up on my desktop and planting his big siberian paw onto a function key and wiping out my last 12 minutes of work! He then smiles at me and says..." So, how do you like me now? ".

    Best regards,

    Dan

Twelve pounds. Moses might get that big, the vet keeps commenting on his big feet.

Hi, The big feet are a telling sign! My cat 'Ferocious' was the size of a coffee cup. It's amazing how well a cat grows on tuna, crunchies and the odd small creatures he catches. He picks his teeth with the tails.
Here he is conquering the ironing board.

That foot thing backfired hard on me once though.

Years back a friend of mine aquired a german shepherd puppy (Chico) that had enormous feet and I emphatically said the same thing here as everybody else. Huge feet equals big dog.

Now I don't know what kind of dog Chico actually turned out to be, but in his whole long life he never got over 20 pounds.

    We were stunned too.

Facebook Takes Narcissism To A New Level
It's just a column piece about Facebook. For the record I found it more amusing and anecdotal than factual.
