In search of the next Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking has stepped down as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University.

Who will be elected? Does it matter?

Probably not. Hawking will be a hard act to follow due to his celebrity (whether or not it's totally deserved). I'd give it to Roger Penrose, John Ellis, maybe Paul Davies.

Considering the apparent controversy over the direction of research in Great Britain, maybe it does matter a bit. Penrose, though, is now 78 years old. I'd like to see the post go to somebody who doesn't already have an endowed chair. My vote: Neil Turok.

"Neil Turok" - undergrad at Chruchill College in Cambridgedoctor from Imperial College in London, studying under David Olive of the superstring fame, worked as an associate scientist at Fermilab, awared Maxwell medal of the Institute of Physics in '92, professor of physics at Princeton, and currently holds the Chari of Mathematical Physics at the University of Cambridge.

Current research includes cyclical universe modeling via brane collisions, possibly probing cosmological inflation issues via Planck satellite.

TED prize, 'most innovative people award,' and director for the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

    Stellar fellow!

    He's got my vote, Cougar.

I saw that and thought "But hasn't string theory been disproven"?
Or at least been very much in dispute in the recent years?

I mean, that's not belittling his achievements as scientist, it was still a theory even if it turned out wrong. But I'd like some details. (And yes, I'm gonna google it next.)

Edit: Wiki says it's not disproven, just set aside as they can't test it currently.
