    Jaywalking

Anyone happen to catch the Jaywalking segment on the Tonight Show today? Pretty sad how little people really know about the space program (specifically the first manned moon missions)...someone thought the moon was farther away than Mars was, too...

I hasten to add for the Anglophiles here.... that was a US show.

It's stunning isn't it, and rather sad too.

"Jaywalking" is edited to be funny. Who knows how many people knew the answers? They weren't the folks Jay was looking for. Besides, how many scholarly space enthusiasts would you expect to find cruising Hollywood bvd. anyway?

Exactly. It shouldn't be taken as a representative sample of the majority or people. They take the stupid ones and put them on TV, because they're the funniest. As much as I like hearing people who know what they're talking about, they're just not as funny.

Yeah, stupid is funnier. Isn't this the same segment where last year they told people that daily newspapers were illegal in Canada and one woman got all upset about the unfairness of such a law?

Think about this too. They whole point of the show is to be funny to the audience, right? If those people were truly representative of the majority, the bit wouldn't be funny to the audience. The whole idea is to laugh at how stupid they are. If the show's not funny, the audience goes elsewhere and so do the ratings and advertising dollars.

Even if it is not a representative population, the fact that there are adults who do not know that stuff is just very, very sad.

I don't know about that, my uncle (may he rest in peace) was very much like Anslow in appearance, and he drank alot.

And most of them are playing to the camera. If they gave the right answer, they wouldn't get to be on TV, right?

Oh well, personally I just think it's a form of contrariety to all the intelligent-promoting shows (ie. who wants to beat up Regis err I mean be a millionaire, Lingo, Street Smarts, etc); Jaywalking and shows of similar themes do not necessarily promote stupidity. Afterall, it's only funny when you know their answers are stupid.

But what do I know? I'm a Canadian... Eh?

Did your Aunt look or act like 'Mrs. Bouquet'? That could explain the drinking! (Of course there's nothing wrong with a good ale or stout!) 8)

It's possible, but the mention of Canada seems to make it seem more like one of Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans" tapes and not Jaywalking.

Heh, she would wish her name was spelt that way - it's Bucket. Hence constantly having to correct the pronunciation...
