Peaceful..

I dunno why, but I just want to share what I am doing..
I'm sitting out on the roof with my laptop, looking up at the magnificent clear sky. It's so peaceful, there is a gentle breeze blowing.. I live out of town, so there is no light from the city.. It's pitch black apart from my laptop screen which I dim..
It's so clear, so beautiful.. It never ceases to amaze me.
Has anyone else done this?

I stand on my balcony... or on the helideck depending on where I am. Not much star activity to be seen because of either intense light pollution or because there's a blinding green helipad lights around me.

Heck, even in my suburban area, where on a good night I can see maybe a few dozen stars, I do it all the time. I happened to get up a little early the other morning, walked to the end of the driveway to get the paper, and just stood there for several minutes looking at the crescent moon and Venus. It never stops being wonderful.

When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be
And there the world below can't bother me

Well, If I knew how to take a picture of the night sky that includes the stars, I would.
It's a beautiful, clear night tonight. (Currently 3:17am), I sit out of my window (two story building) and gaze up at the stars.. The breeze, gently blowing.. So peaceful.

At the moment, it's 5:31am. I'm fairly new to stargazing, as in.. Telling where a planet is, etc.
But as the sun slowly rises over the horizon, I believe I can see Venus? Shining oh so bright.
It's a beautiful sight.
Especially while living out of town.

I live in a city but it gets dark enough in my neighbourhood that I can see several stars from my second floor window on a clear night. I usually take some time to gaze at them before I go to bed. Until earlier this year, I was living in a basement apartment with bright lights outside so this view is somewhat new to me. It's very peaceful . . . maybe this is the "dark sacred night" that Louis Armstrong was singing about. I'm not much for identifying celestial objects either, but I think I saw Orion last night.

Ah, about a week ago, I was sitting out back, drinking coffee and waiting for the sun to come up and caught Venus and the Moon (when you can see the entirety of the moon but only a sliver is lit up) between my neighbors roof and the overhang of my patio. I honestly couldn't believe how bright Venus looked even with the skies beginning to brighten. I just felt lucky, had I hit snooze one more time, I would have never seen it past my awning.

There's something about a quiet night under the stars that always has its appeal. Especially after a long and stressful day.

I don't sit on the roof anymore- not since I fell off it that once and landed on a police car.

I started perching on the fence after that. But one night I lost my balance and fell into the neighbors yard with their three rottweilers. A little peace was shattered as I went screaming half pants through their backdoor and out the front.

To combat that, I instead built a treehouse in the Front yard.
One peaceful night, I learned that it had termites as the whole structure collapsed unto my $45,000 truck.

You know what?
Peace is for losers.

Now I watch wrestling.

I used to do that a lot as a kid. Our town was never above saving pennies where they could, so although the street lights turned on at dusk, they went off around 10:00 till morning. A little bit of sky glow remained but the Milky Way was visible, meteor showers, satellites were easy, and people didn't used to stay up til midnight all the time. It was quiet, and you could hear a dog bark a half mile away.
Now I teach physics, with a little astronomy thrown in, and instead of a planetarium, I always prefer a single night of a visit to a dark sky site. The kids still OOOHHH over their first look at the real Milky Way, the Dippers, Polaris, Draco, Andromeda, and any available planets. It's still pretty awesome, and makes me feel appropriately, very teensy-weensy in the universe. pete

The astronomers on this site may beg to differ, but my favorite rubbernecking times are when there are a few skiffs of cloud across the night sky. They really help drive home the point that the stars are not part of the thing skin of air, but are oh so ever, heart breathtakingly, farther.
The bracing night breezes blowing the slowly turning leaves are a lovely counterpoint to the chilling, chuckling, stars.
