After seeing so much footage, both real and dramatized, of the Apollo missions, there are a few questions that have been bugging me. I'm sure that I can get good answers from you fine folks.
1) When the rocket lifts off, I see tons of white crap falling off of it. It looks like paint. Or maybe ice. What is it, and why does it do that?
2) When the astronauts go up the elevator and into the capsule, they are carrying what look like briefcases, but with hoses. What's in those cases?
3) How was environmental (temperature) control maintained in the capsule and LEM? Space heaters (no pun intended!) are dangerous and energy inefficient. Bonfires are just a bad idea. Steam radiators are heavy. So how did they do it?
BTW, I was reminded of these questions while watching From the Earth to the Moon, of which I am 1/3 of the way through. Now that's good TV!
