Yes, interesting article. A major early step that was eventually major enough to alter the chemical composition of the planet's atmosphere, i.e., adding oxygen, which allowed for the development of animals.

Would have been more than 2.5Ga BP if Wikipedia is right about there being 2.8 Ga old cyanobacteria fossils.
I think it is more likely that life began right here on the earth. The conditions were right without the need for amino acids from comets or meteors. The Miller-Urey experiment proved that.

I'm curious - why the "rolleyes?"
Looking at the details of the Miller-Urey experiment, I find they indicate that life is self-assembling, given enough energy and ingredients.
