Simple Question [Bright object "near" Moon]

I live in the Southern Hemisphere, currently as I am about to go to bed at dawn there are visible the Moon, what I would expect to be Venus, and something bright close to the Moon. I imagine it is probably another planet, but I would like to be enlightened.

    Greetings, and welcome to BAUT.

Regardless of hemisphere, the bright object near the moon yesterday morning shortly before dawn was almost certainly the planet Jupiter, with Venus and Mars very close to each other further towards the east.

A good reference for sky charts (among many) is Heavens-Above. Once on the site, and after selecting your location, look for the Whole Sky Chart link and then plug in a date and time. You can also increase the size of the chart on-screen.

    Happy observing!

Welcome Flamencoprof... as a fellow NZ'r I too went to the heavens-above site... They are good at what they do... The morning sky is often more interesting than the early evening. But I need to sleep.

I never was all that fast to begin with, but yeah, it seems the years are piling up
