    Solar filters: Chapter II

O.K., at the risk of sounding stupifyingly ignorant of things astronomical, can anyone tell me what eyepieces they use when viewing the sun? I've got a good quality solar filter (Thousand Oaks) and it was clear today for a change, but the trees and my own confusion about eyepieces got in the way. I have an 8" Newtonian and 9mm and 25mm Plossel eyepieces. Are these adequate? If not, what works best?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I used to have a Thousand Oaks solar filter (until I sold the scope I bought it for). I used it with 2" eyepieces of long focal length and with shorter focal length 1 1/4 inch eyepieces. It really shouldn't matter. Just start with the lowest power and work your way up to whatever eyepiece gives you the view you want.

Have fun! Solar observing is pretty cool!

Pick your poison...do you want the image of the solar disk to fill your field of view, or are you into picking out individual flux lines in a spot? Start low power and work your way up -- just remember, make sure your filter covers completely...

And by the way, I'm working out a design for solar filters to go inside the dust caps of my 130mm and 105mm scopes...they'll swivel into position for use, out of the way for stop down use (viewing the Moon), or the hole will be sealed for storage. I've almost got it figgered how the two different setups will work...
