Weird thing on Baut while editing - "already pinged..."

So I was editing a post today - when below my text, in bold, there was a line reading "Already pinged http://www.weird_warp.com" (take out the "_")

I've never heard of that site - much less intentionally 'pinged' it.

Anyone know what that was about?

I've seen that myself. We also have a new user by that name. I can't answer your question, but I'd like to know it when somebody figures it out.

Read about pingbacks: Trackbacks, Pingbacks, and Refbacks

Edit: There's a little more about linkbacks, and a documented usage, in topic Trackbacks.

Edit: I'll guess it was topic Driving! that you did the editing, because in an article user weirdwarp.com has a link to weirdwarp.com in his/her signature. Action at weirdwarp.com (by that member, probably) earns the pingback status back in the topic. It's telling you the topic pinged there and there's no need to ping it again -- as if you'd want to. (Anyone who starts a new article there, or maybe who edits one, is so informed.)

No, I still don't really understand these link features, how they really work, and the benefits thereof. They seem pretty useless to me but then I don't value links like that and the forum operators might. To me they are just noisy business. Or busy noisiness.

I moved this thread here, seems more appropriate. And sorry, I don't have any answers.

They do make sense but you don't see them a lot here because we're set up so all those links require moderation and we don't have any moderators consistently going through the new links (with tens of thousands of pending links, it's an overwhelming thing to start doing).

Mainly the idea is to get a citation link in the thread if it's been cited somewhere else and for that use I think it's excellent.

Unfortunately about 3/4 of the links are to quote farms, sites that looks like the only thing they do is quote the start of articles, posts, etc. and make a link to them so they can get a link back and thus get high rating in the search engines so their ads will be seen.

My policy when moderating these links has been to remove links to link farms, remove cross-links between www.bautforum.com and bautforum.com as well as internal links caused by one thread citing another.
I have allowed links from all real discussion fora, including such as thunderbolts and glp, because I've considered it useful knowledge that there's been a cite there.

    Am I a bad boy?

If I have done something wrong then let me know. I am not sure about pingbacks myself.
