Seems like the Pole Shift(tm) is coming after all. Mothers hide your sons! ...or keep them away from Zetatalk at least

At that rate of decline, the field could vanish altogether in 1,500 to 2,000 years, said Jeremy Bloxham of Harvard University.
Better start planning for it now!

    lol

This keeps getting brought up every few months. It seems when the chips are down and we don't seem to be getting any closer to Planet X, the magnetic pole reversal gets bantered about.

And then someone mentions that Nancy claims a physical pole shift will occur, and it dies off again for a few months.

I think this time the discussion is being caused by a recent NOVA (PBS) documentary on the phoenomena. Terrestrial magnetic reversals have been known about for quite some time, and have occured many times in the past. With the advent of space based magnetometers and other devices, we probably have a better idea of the nature of past reversals and how the next will manifest itself. As with most documentaries, there was a little artistic license involved - some inference to catastrophism. All in all, it was presented fairly well.

Of course, it has no relationship with Nancy's planet X, however it is quite interesting. There's been some discussions of the magnetic reversal on the other forums here.

Who maintains a secret base at the North Pole? Santa Claus of course! What do we know about this allegedly jolly old man and what do we know about his operations? Only propaganda distributed by his followers. He could be responsible for the changes in the magnetic field. A thorough investigation of old saint Nick is definitely long overdue. For all we know, he may be behind the Apollo conspiracy.

Never trust a flying fat man. Specially one in a planet x colored suit.

I thought the worst thing a magnetic pole flip-flop would do was mess up navigation. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

    Hello,

Actually, Magnetic variation has been on charts for a LONG time. Now, with GPS, the magnetic poles could magically stop being magnetic...and we'd still know where we were and where we were going. GPS receivers don't care about Magnetic North, they just triangulates via multiple satellites. As long as they are working, magnetic North is somewhat passe.

My handheld GPS doesn't even have compass functions; it figures out where North is by two quick fixes on the receiver. It figures out the direction I am travelling using those two fixes, and then displays where North is based on that. No magnetism required.

If Magnetic North does wander far more significantly sometime in the next two millenuia, not *too* many ships will get lost.

Fasten your seatbelt to avoid falling off your chair, then read the following:

Signs of the Times #535 (from godlikeproduction Message Board)
I purchased a new large flatscreen television (tube not plasma) last summer. The first setup procedure was what it referred to as "geomagnetic correction". The manual simply states this function helps to correct for "geomagnetic differences" that might cause the image on screen to tilt. [and from another poster] This does not bode well for airplanes, now does it? The Earth´s polarity has tilted a full 13 degrees from its original North pole. [and from another poster] Compass and magnetic north changing geographic positions would make most navigational maps obsolete. Welcome to GPS [which airplanes use]! No one would ever discover just how fast the poles are moving with GPS would they? [and from another poster] My magnetic compass is off about 12 degrees from its pre-1995 reading. [Note: magnetic Irregularities noted for months.]
    (emphasis added)

The woo woo interpretation of the degaussing setup is my favorite! Our "polarity" changing is pretty good also!
