What's your favorite kind of literature?

My first poll! Let's see what comes out of this...

Just to be clear, in "genre literature" I include:
    -science fiction
    -fantasy
    -horror
    -mystery novels
-... (if you have more suggestions, please mention them)

I tried to discriminate these in the poll options, but kept getting a "too many poll options" warning, so if you reply is "genre literature" please say which kind.

Sci-fi is the only fiction I read at the moment. It's a miracle I got up the attention span for that.

Usually I read sci-fi and fantasy. Don't read much mainstream lit at all but I do like some historical fiction. But I also read a fair amount of science related books as well.

I didn't vote because you only get one choice and I am an indiscriminate reader--almost. I won't read "bodice rippers" because they're stupid and boring, and I seldom read "westerns." ( Lonesome Dove is a notable exception.) Oh, and I think porn is also stupid and boring. Usually.

Mysteries, dective stories, some historical stuff, ocationally trashy romance--laugh if you want, they make for a nice easy read when I am tired, Harry Potter, info about NASA, and the astronauts, ocationally I like comedic books.

In what category does that big fat "Advanced Engineering Mathematics" book fit in?

I guess my kind of "prose" is "academic".

Gethen, I think you could reply "equal parts of the two". They won't be exactly equal, but I don't think there's much harm in that.
Mr X, your reply would be "none of the above". I'm only asking about fiction.

No. Although I imagine that any resemblance to real persons living or dead is purely coincidental...

I generally hate reading literature but have fallen in love with the great late Douglas Adams.

Am reading The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy right now and am loving it! It is a mix of Sci-Fi and Comedy.

I like reading funny or interesting things and as long as I am being entertained I am happy.

If you like Hitchhikers I suggest reading Eric Idle's Road to Mars. A very fun book.

The only types of books I don't read are trashy romances, mystery novels (I can always figure out everything halfway through the book, and that's a maximum), and non-fiction about politics, mental illness (don't ask, unless you *really* want to know), and most true crime books. (I've read one or two that I liked, but they were much less sensational than usual.)

Of course, I'm an English major. Probably the only one here, in fact.
