"Smiley Face Conjunction" - Venus, Jupiter, Moon

    Hi all

Here are my images from last nights "Smiley Face Conjunction" of Venus, Jupiter and the Moon.

Clouds threatened to spoil the event for me as the evening approached, but luckily they cleared just enough to grab some images.

I ended up going to a different spot, as I didn't want the same type of images from the day before, with the same foreground interest. So I found a nice reserve at Green Point, overlooking Brisbane Water.

After getting rained on for 5 minutes, attacked by mosquitoes, sniffed out by a wet dog who went for a swim just near me, stepping in water on the rocks (cause I left my red light torch at home! ), and almost missing the entire thing due to clouds, I'm happy enough with how the shots turned out

Low res shots are attached. My full report and higher-res images here:

    Thanks for looking.

Really pretty shots Mike. Thanks and clear skies.

A friend of mine in Scotland managed to capture the occultation - maybe I can persuade him to post a pic here.

Awesome shots! Kinda cool seeing the conjunction 100+ degrees different to what I saw tonight.

    Hi Mike,

Nice shots, mate. Just trying to work out where you took them from - hazarding a guess...looking out over Brisbane Waters from the Tascott or Koolewong area??

Actually, no - the directions are wrong. From Point Frederick?

Good shots Mike. I was visiting Kingscliff at the time, and I had a good view of it, but I didn't have my SLR with me, unfortunately. Its a very beautiful sight "in the flesh" , but you have done a good job of capturing it photographically.

    Cheers,
    Judd

    Thanks mate.
Close, I considered going to Point Frederick but have been there before and the foreground interest was limited.

I ended up at Green Point. There's a google map in the following post which shows exactly where.

The photos in there were taken before it got dark enough to see the conjunction.

Thanks Judd and everyone else for your kind comments.

I've got 2 more images to post - one is a reprocess and one is new. They're both HDR shots.

Mate, your sunset panorama from that link is stunning - I've seen Ken Duncan's at Erina Fair going for hundreds that aren't a patch on that.

Many thanks for your comments, it's very much appreciated.

It's very exciting to be featured on APOD today. I've received loads of encouraging feedback from people around the world and it's humbling that my image has had such a positive effect on them.

    Thanks again.
