i have an idea for a new reality show

for the first season, they could lock a bunch of wanna be hollywood writers in a room until they write a script for a real tv show with a plot and fictional characters and everything.
then, for the second season, they could cast some real actors and shoot a full season of that real tv show.
the third season would be airing the show that they write on a major network as part of their prime time schedule

they wouldn't even need to bother filming the first 2 seasons and just start by showing the world the final product.

    think it would catch on?

This is a reality show about making a reality show? So wacky it might just work.

I think they already do this...

I remember back when I was a kid. You'd turn on the TV and see TV shows that were about people and places you'd never seen before. Spies. Architects with huge families. Morons trapped on an island. Okay that last one was a bad example. But now, you turn on the TV and see some rich socialite struggling through the checkout lane at the local Bargain-Mart. You see snotty people berating people that think they can sing. Okay, another bad example. But at least on the Gong Show they didn't build it up as if it actually mattered who won.

No. I totally agree. I'd love to see season three of this idea come to pass.
Pushing Daisies was by far on of the best written shows to come along in a very long time, and it's done. Barely one full season into it. My understanding is that there won't even be a wrap up. They'll just get to the last film episode and drop it from the schedule. What ever will they put on in it's place?

    Celebrity backgammon?
Are you uglier than your pet?
Who wants a soccer ball in the face?

I don't want to see anyone on TV that might see in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

nope- a reality show about making a real tv show- like, say, a sitcom about 2 guys raising a kid or a bunch of wacky science nerd stereotypes in an apartment or something- only they don't even bother to show the writing, casting, and production of the show. they just skip to the final product.
yes, i know that on the surface it sounds like pretty much any tv show made up until about 10 years ago. but no one watches that kind of show any more, so they need to retool the concept and market it as a reality show to get people to watch it.

Yup, most 'reality' shows are already scripted.

Audiences are being punked by the networks.

BTW: 'Reality' show concepts are nothing new.... go watch the original 'Death Race 2000' by the brilliant low-budget director Paul Bartel with Sylvester "Rocky/Rambo" Stallone and David "Kung Fu" Carradine. This was made in >1975<

I've heard or read several times that reality shows are to one extent or another faked and the credits include writers and such. But I've also heard that part of the reason why they're made is because they're cheap because of the lack of writers. These claims seem contradictory.

"Boston Legal" recently had an episode where the lawyers sued the networks for putting on inane TV shows. It was so relevant that I kept a recording of it. In the show they actually won the lawsuit because the over 50 judge agreed that TV was mostly nonsense.....and the Judge was played by a former "Laugh in " comedian!

LOL!! I'm guilty of watching those shows. That said, I will miss the Pie Maker. Why is it some of the most promising shows get canned so early in their life?

I can beat that reference with something even older and more prophetic - The Year of Sex Olympics

    From Wikipedia

The Year of the Sex Olympics is a 1968 television play made by the BBC and first broadcast on BBC2 as part of its Theatre 625 strand. It stars Leonard Rossiter, Tony Vogel, Suzanne Neve and Brian Cox. It was directed by Michael Elliot. The writer was Nigel Kneale, best known as the creator of Quatermass.

Influenced by concerns about overpopulation, the counterculture of the 1960s, and the societal effects of television, the play depicts a world of the future where a small elite control the media, keeping the lower classes docile by serving them an endless diet of lowest common denominator programming and pornography. The play concentrates on an idea the programme controllers have for a new programme which will follow the trials and tribulations of a group of people left to fend for themselves on a remote island. In this respect, the play is often cited as having anticipated the craze for reality television.

And I raise you with Elio Petri's The 10th Victim (Italy/1965).

    From Wikipedia:

In the near future, big wars are avoided by giving individuals with violent tendencies a chance to kill in the Big Hunt. The Hunt is the most popular form of entertainment in the world and also attracts participants who are looking for fame and fortune.

    Basically TAG with real bullets.

Based on a story by Robert Sheckley from 1953.
