Will the USA ever be put under Martial Law?

Ive been hearing everywhere if the US gets put under Martial Law, guns are banned, FEMA "death" camps and that sort of thing.

Now I know this sounds crazy, but ive been hearing this everywhere, and this website is sort of my safety net, since you guys are pretty damn well educated!

Want to offer your two cents?

I don't expect national martial law. Too many people would resist it and boycott it and refuse to work and refuse to cooperate.

National martial law did happen in Germany and Japan in the 1930s and during WW II, but those countries weren't made up of a wide variety of different kinds of people like the US is. In the US, we've got a lot of people who would not put up with it.

I've lived under local martial law in small towns and local districts in cities, for a short time (a few days) as a journalist. It wasn't so bad. The alternative was rioting and people being killed by the rioters. Just be sure you carry your papers with you where ever you go.

What I want to know is: why? Why would the US be put under martial law? Have Martians attacked while I wasn't looking?

And while you're at it, please tell us why in the world martial law would be implemented?

This is just an old rumor that has been floating around for decades. Some Presidents have used localized Martial Law in the past, mainly to stop riots. Over the decades, communists and anarchists have claimed that right-wing Presidents will declare martial law and have all “liberals” arrested, while right-wingers have claimed that some “leftist” President will declare martial law and arrest all conservatives.

This is just one of the many “conspiracy” theories on the internet today. Sort of like UFOs, Bigfoot, etc.

Ah. Thanks Sam5. Right after I posted I thought he might be taking about the current economic troubles. So it's an old woo-woo rumour... Thanks.

Why would the average person/family have to go to a FEMA "death" camp?? Did I miss something?

Judging from your user name, should we assume there is going to be a revolution by humans? If so, why?

Not to mention how heavily armed a large portion of the US citizenry is. And FEMA death camps? I'd be more frightened of being placed on "Dancing in a Minefield with the Stars"

I agree. FEMA wouldn't know what to do.

The biggest thing we have to fear today is violent crime. I stopped living in big cities years ago because of the violent crime.

Anyway, the government has to have a lot of citizens working so they can continue to collect taxes from us, that includes democrats and republicans, conservatives and liberals, so they couldn't put very many people in a prison camp.

I actually grew up in a police state (Libya), till the age of 11. When you're a kid, you don't really notice it. In fact, my parents, who were expats, loved it. There was next to no crime, so it was a really safe place to bring up a kid. According to them, as long as you were apolitical, and didn't do anything obviously stupid, it was pretty wonderful. Expats do tend to be apolitical of course, and to have a healthy respect for other people's cultures and norms; i.e. they tend to get there head down, work, and stay out of trouble.

Mind you, if you happened to be a politcal Libyan, well...then that was a whole different kettle of fish.

I wonder if we have any Western expat BAUT members working in the Gulf, or in China? These days maybe also...Russia?

No, you haven't. You have heard it in whatever places you go to
in order to hear about imaginary conspiracies, and probably not even
    all of those.

Tell us: From how many different people have you actually heard
these assertions? I'm not asking who they are, I just want a number,
as accurate as you can make it.

A quick search for the terms on Google shows that it is really a recurrent theme.

My opinion: I don´t think it is possible in the US in a foreseeable future.

I thought of this as a hypothetical question, "if" it gets put under martial law, such and such will happen

Has everyone else been reading it different than me?

Canada was put under martial law once during our FLQ crisis. Some radicals in Quebec kidnapped and killed a member of parliament. I'm a little rusty on the details, but Pierre Trudeu was prome minister at the time

If FEMA were ever put in charge of "death camps" then - given their track record - I'd volunteer to go to one. It would probably put Club Med to shame.

Increasingly likely? You mean from 0.000000000000000001% to 0.00000000000000001%?

    ROFL
I was going to make a joke about FEMA death camps consisting of dirty trailer homes that give you a respiratory disease after living in them for a year, but that probably wouldn't be a good idea.

"ever" is a really long time. But I think that the worse danger is past with the changing of the guard.

From the sounds of it, they are in charge of death camps. They're called disaster relief trailers.

As for nation-wide martial law; one thing the US has going for it is it's size. Not population size (though that helps), but land size. It would be quite a feat to be able to strong-arm the entire country.

    Edited to avoid double post

And all of them willing to enforce the martial law. With all that implies.

    Won't happen.

Nope. Even if US government wanted to impose martial law -- and even if it had a good, unselfish objective reasons, like imminent riots and anarchy, -- it simply has no resources for it. Too many armed citizens, too many soldiers questioning orders. At worst, we'd get riots and anarchy. And even that is unlikely in the extreme.

I would like to think that our military would be willing to turn their guns back on their commanding officers should they be ordered to do anything too opposed to their ethics. However, it's happened before in other countries - so it's hard to say just how unwilling some are to question authority.

Worst case scenario - there's always WOLVERINE!!! Don't know if I could join though. I'm a Spartan fan.

You're right, it sounds crazy. One of the (several) purposes of the Second Ammendment is to prevent such an event--banning guns won't eliminate the millions we already have! A side note--I'd heard somewhere that people are buying up guns lately thinking of re-selling them "after the ban" (not that I think there is one around the corner...in turn, not that I think some won't at least want to try).
