i do look up at the sky when trying to go to sleep by counting stars. all i see are stars.

    Hi, Jim,

The sky where you live is the very same sky that everyone in the Northern Hemisphere sees. Only a few phenomena (such as solar eclipses) differ very much from one part of the world to another.

You can certainly see planets, and you have. You just don't know which of the "stars" you see are actually planets. Hint: two of the planets, Venus and Jupiter, are among the brightest "stars" in the sky.

Comets are irregular and difficult to predict (even after they've been spotted). There is a comet right now, though; look for the thread about it right in this forum.

I suggest that you get in touch with a local astronomy club. There may be one in your school (if you're in school) or in the nearest city. I bet they'd be glad to show you some of the interesting things in the sky... your sky and mine.
