Micheal Faraday.Was able to retain his personal faith, and use it as a driving force to aid in making great discoveries. I hope that is not too political/religious, but those are my feelings on the matter.

It's hard to argue against Einstein and Newton as the most brilliant and influential scientists who ever lived, but my personal favorite is Feynman... having read Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! and recently listened to the Six Easy Pieces lecture recordings, I'm impressed and inspired by his approach to life and learning.

Sagan because he had a knack of making science interesting and was able to make it palatable to the average Joe.

I agree with Paracelsus about Darwin. I think the subject matter is much less interesting than the controversy.
