Along with Gay, I idolize Feynman, Einstein and Sagan. Hawking ain't too shabby, either.
Man, that's a hard one. I'll have to get back to you.
Micheal Faraday.Was able to retain his personal faith, and use it as a driving force to aid in making great discoveries. I hope that is not too political/religious, but those are my feelings on the matter.
It's hard to argue against Einstein and Newton as the most brilliant and influential scientists who ever lived, but my personal favorite is Feynman... having read Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! and recently listened to the Six Easy Pieces lecture recordings, I'm impressed and inspired by his approach to life and learning.
Darwin because he was able to see the forest AND the trees.
Einstein because he was able to put so much together.
Sagan because he had a knack of making science interesting and was able to make it palatable to the average Joe.

[shakes fist] Farnsworth!!![/shakes fist]

Darwin because he ticks so many people off;
Sagan because he opened my mind to the wonders of the universe;
Heisenberg because he's the first scientist I've ever heard of to become famous for saying he's uncertain;
James Lovelock for the 'Gaia Principle';
James Hansen and David Graham for having the stones to call it like it is in the face of enormous pressure to keep their mouths shut; and
Jacques Cousteau--just because.
Steve Zissou
Graham Hancock.....
Robert Ballard and Zahi Hawass for introducing me to archeology.
Jane Goodall for introducing me to the idea of non-human intelligence.
Jacques Cousteau, like Paracelsus said. (Also for giving me the second part of my name.)
Carl Sagan because he was The Man.
Velma Dinkley for showing me that nerd girls are very valuable to society.
Charles Darwin
Patrick Moore
Isaac Asimov

[windmills arms wildly]Dr Magnus Pyke[/windmills arms wildly] - for the tremendous & positive influence he had on me as a child.
For all time greats, Newton, Da Vinci & Archimedes.
Who? What?James Hansen and David Graham for having the stones to call it like it is in the face of enormous pressure to keep their mouths shut
Google yields a million people of those names...
James Hansen is the NASA proponent of AGW. David Graham was the FDA reviewer who testified before Congress on the issue of reviewer harassment at the FDA.
