    A flying saucer?

NGC 6504 sure looks like one to me. Notice the odd outer halo that is
the same thickness everywhere around the brighter inner core and disk.
A very odd edge on galaxy about 200 million light years away. If I did
the math right that makes it about the same size as our galaxy to
slightly larger. It's "flying" through a rather empty area of Hercules.

yeah....though the instantaneous image in my mind was / is of one of those 'Zero' planes,
used in the Pacific theatre...'at twelve o'clock'...!

amazing that a galaxy, sized like ours, is so 'perfectly' edge-on to our line of vision

    thanks for sharing

It really is different, Pretty dense throughout it's disc. Has any of the orbiting telescopes ever imaged this galaxy?. Overall another great image on these very distant galaxies. Welldone Rick and Clear Skies.

Really interesting. Such an empty region, maybe it has formed with very little disturbance and being so perfectly edge on we can see the outer halos much more distinctly but why so flat? Thanks Rick.

    mahesh,
The two images of 5838 are highly processed IR images by the HST. They are black and white representations of IR images such that the whiter the pixel the redder (deeper in IR) it is. It has no relation to intensity, just frequency. Thus they bear no resemblance to what you'd see visually. The original article, which the poster failed to credit is at:
    http://www.stecf.org/conferences/sardinia/node30.html
The article is far more interesting than the two images alone. It's all about dust found in S0 type galaxies.

Note the images cover the central 20" of arc at the core of the galaxy nowhere near the entire galaxy. Posting such a misleading image without explanation should be avoided in my opinion.
