LOL That was pretty good.
For those who would like to know what the video is before you click a Mystery Link:
It's a news report covering the internet Phenomenon of Phil Plait's support and backing as as a presidential candidate.
Does not work for the BA he not exactly an unknown.
Anyway you can get Phil on the ballot for real in a "Write in"? I heard that expression a while ago, and thought that would be a hoot.
Looks like Phil is yesterday's candidate
Anyone want to be Vice President?![]()

"I can't believe it doesn't work! I found it on the internet, man!"
I would vote for him, if I wasn't a non-voter![]()
As a reader of Muse Magazine, I already promised to vote for Kokopelli, Muse's mascot. But don't worry, Koko is very pro-space.

popular vote is nothing more then a way to see wich way the populous is leaning
So, this isn't about his presidential qualifications... or is it? I just wanted to say I heard Phil's name on TV last night -- maybe. And this thread is sitting here begging for it.
Now I can't remember what it was about... Some physics calculation, maybe the force of some falling object? A guy in a falling elevator? Sorry. The narrator said something to the effect of: "Dr. Phil Platt (sounded like Platt a little, not Plait), of Sonoma State University, says..." and relayed whatever. No Phil sound-bite. No clip. And, again, I am pretty sure it was some some physics calculation and not an astronomy fact.
The show? Ah, well... Spike TV's "MANswers". I was gonna cite a Spike TV MANswers web page for the curious, but they all include obnoxious video. Wikipedia will explain the show. No, I'm not proud to have listened to it. And, I sure wasn't listening hard. It came on and I was web-surfing and the remote was too far away, and I let it play, and I wasn't paying attention (except for the nudity -- number-1-rated nude beach? Copacabana, Brazil!) and I heard Phil's name, or at least thought I did. Definitely "Sonoma State" (his old gig) and definitely "Phil" and probably "Plait".
So, I guess maybe he is qualified to be president. He was probably cited on MANswers but didn't seem to make an actual appearance. Well played.
Edit: I should have Googled before posting. BA Blog: BA on Manswers?:
Edit for followup: For the record, I dug a little and reported to the BA, who seemed to want to locate the episode containing a brief reference to him:I was sent an email from a reader who said he saw me (or possibly the site) mentioned on the new — and incredibly annoying — TV show Manswers, which airs on Spike TV.
Web video of the segment:
AOL Video: How to survive an elevator fall
or
Vidslib.com Video: How to survive an elevator fall
or
Spike TV Excerpt: Survive an Elevator Freefall?
It's at around 2:50 in, of the 3:20 video.
During falling elevator video, narrator cites [Physicist Philip Plait] for: "In Freefall...
a Person Accelerates 30 ft. per Second" with overlayed CGI text.
From Wikipedia: MANswers, the segment appears to be "HOW MANY FLOORS
CAN YOU FALL AND STILL SURVIVE IN AN ELEVATOR PLUNGE?" from Episode
102, September 26, 2007.

Or, perhaps some other person.
BA Blog: President-elect Obama
W O W.
This topic's as good a repository as any for new bites of presidential political news. It beats starting a one-shot new thread for each blog article. My main purpose here is just to alert people of interesting BA Blog topics about the new US administration. If you feel the urge to discuss politics outside the constraints of the rules of BAUT Forum (which, incidentally, are slightly more lax for this special section), go to the blog and comment.
That said, there is: BA Blog: Obama’s a geek?
Maybe [Wired article]. I don’t see anything in that article that’s totally convincing. It’s interesting, though.
I hear the new President elect is kind to science. Any chance for an science advisor position for Mr. Plait?
Here, speculate on this:
1) BA Blog: Pikes Peak (November 2nd, 2008 1:00 PM by Phil Plait)
2) Barack Obama Public Schedule SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25Last week I found myself on an airplane to Albuquerque… for reasons I’ll disclose eventually.
Data mining: Sometimes, it's fool's gold.EARLY VOTE FOR CHANGE RALLY WITH BARACK OBAMA
University of New Mexico Johnson Field
Corner of Girard Blvd. and Central Ave.
Albuquerque, NM
Sometimes, it's not.
Edit: Since nobody rose to the bait, the BA's twittering indicated his Albuquerque visit was October 27, at which time Mr. Obama was in distant Pennsylvania. Oh, well...

Gosh, all this time I never knew Obama was the Nerd Party Candidate.
*Ow! Hey, it wasn't that bad of a pun!*
