    Getting prints of Apollo photographs

    Hi everyone.

I have what can most charitably be described as a "semi-astronomy" question:

How does one obtain large (>12'') prints from the Apollo missions? I have a daughter who happens to share name with a lunar geological feature and thought getting a photo of it blown up would be a neat thing to have (and might interest her in science!)

So, I understand that the photos are available for researchers, but how do the non-illuminati get copies? Freedom of Information Act? NASA publicity office? How?

Hi and welcome to the BABB! Hope you'll stick around after you get your question answered (and Kiddo is invited, too, of course. How old is she? And--dare I ask--what is her name? It's not "Tycho Crater", is it? )

Anyway, you mean besides downloading them off the Internet and saving them to some kind of photo-managing program and printing them out?

Well, as in other aspects of Western civilization,

    everything's

    for

    sale

    somewhere.

I found these by Googling "prints apollo mission". I'm sure there are more out there.

To find NASA photos to download, Google "nasa apollo images".

    http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/
    http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary.../apollo11.html

If you use "photos" instead of "images", you'll get mostly Moon landing hoax websites.

No, it's Hadley. As in "Mount Hadley" (and other features) near the Apollo 15 landing site. Oh, and she's only 6 months old, so no huge rush at the moment.

Yes. I was inspired by the display at the Hayden Planetarium in NYC. I'm really hoping to find a place where I can get high-quality really big prints. I suppose I could try to find super hi-res images and then try to find a really good photo printer....

Yes, I suspect that might have been my problem.

FYI, of the sites I've seenthis had the best quality images (linked off of one of the sites you mentioned)

and this is the most complete (link is just to Apollo 15 shots)

Thanks for the help! I will be an avid reader, if not much of a contributor since I doubt I can answer the questions posed.

Sounds to me like you want a hi-res version of AS15-86-11603 - 3000x3000 enough for you? That would work out to 250 dpi at 12" square.

I found it on the GRIN site.

Welcome jst! I'm sure your daughter is as beautiful as the Hadley landing site of Apollo 15 ;-)

As already said here, check the Apollo Archive. The images there are actually in the ALSJ, but th ALSJ also contains plenty of assembled panoramas.

A15 surely had some of the most spectacular shots of all missions.

Some very-hi-res scans may be at http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/

Mike Constantine sells some assebled panoramas:

And if you want to spent some real money, buy some of Michael Light's prints from "Full Moon":

[silently relieved that there isn't a little girl out there somewhere named "Mare Fecunditatis"]

P.S. You did "get" that "everything's for sale somewhere" in light blue were four clickable links to sites selling glossies, posters, etc. of Apollo pix? Sometimes people new to Internet message boards don't catch that...

So you don't have to print them out, you can just buy them...

    Thanks for the plug Harald!

Yeah, I do have some pans of Mount Hadley, one of which is available as a large print. The Station 6 pan shows Dave Scott, with Mount Hadley and the Swann hills in the background. http://moonpans.co.uk/a15sta6.htm

There are a selection of sizes you can choose from here

    Thanks

Hi Mike. Didn't knew you're lurking around here. ;-)

Disclaimer: I only know MC as a fellow ALSJ contributor and I'm in no way affiliated with his business. ;-)

I did, thanks. Maybe I didn't click deep enough on those sites, but they didn't seem to have quite what I was looking for.

    Mike's site, however...

    a) do you ship to the US?

    b) are they framed?

Write to the public affairs office of the various NASA centers and see if you can get any photos. You would have to look up the addresses.

The one for the Johnson Space Center is

    Public Affairs Office
    Building 2N
    Johnson Space Center
    2101 NASA Rd. 1
    Houston, TX 77058

I do not know if you would put the building number next to the PAO part--not sure what proper ettiquette calls for. The freedom of Information Act's office is also in that building. If you (or anyone else) would like some names of specific people from the building I can try to copy some names down tomorrow.

Yeah I ship to the US, depending on the size, the shipping to the US starts at around $8 for the 23 inch prints up to around $18 for a 74 inch print.

I dont frame the prints, as it massively increases the shipping. Its far cheaper If I send you the print and you get it framed locally

    Thanks

Thanks Mike. I thought that might be the case, but thought I'd ask!
