    Thanks BAUT.

As you can tell by my posting record, I tend to read a lot more here than contribute, having a background in Psychiatry, rather than science or engineering means I am mostly an observer, but I would like to congratulate bautforum for the contribution you make to rational thought, let me explain. I personally never doubted that the Apollo moon landings were anything other than a matter of historical record, I also understand how the anti-science, paranoid mindset works, but lacking an engineering background was at a loss to explain the HOW. A friend of mine, after watching a few documentaries and reading dark moon, was convinced that the moon landings were a hoax, by using information provided by forum members i can happily announce that I have "turned him round" I would never have been able to achieve this without the valuble contributions of this board. so pat yourselves on the back, you have achieved another small victory for rational thinking.

If you had just patted him on the back Hard Enough at the beginning, you could have turned him around then and saved yourself and us the trouble.

I can't understand how any rational person can doubt the moon landings in light of the amount of Anorthosite brought back in the form of moon rocks (from the highlands - basalt was from the Maria) and the discovery of Armalcolite (which is not present on Earth - and named by Armstrong, Aldrin, Collins) plus the absence of almost all the volatile elements such as Potassium.

Moon hoax believers don't believe in science do they?

Or don't understand it. But many are indeed anti-science, and are extreemely verbal about that fact.

    here's a theory:

Imagine that Dawkins "memes" theory is right.

Now, as an example, the Fritzl case in Austria
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritzl_case

So combine the two and maybe what is happening is that secrets are turning into memes and spreading around the world, and manifest as paranoia.
Obviously the manifestation is only symbolic but just think of the power of such memes.....

They wouldn't affect everyone, just make connection with certain people like the legs of a table only connect with the floor at certain points.

    I do believe in memes.

This is why I have some respect for some conspiracy believers.

What do they say? Your sins will find you out? Well maybe the process is via memes.

I suppose we've seen weirder claims to authority here than someone who's spent years in a straitjacket claiming psychiatric expertise

Today my wife is "celebrating" with her friends.

They are having an "8/8/'08" party.

(I'm not telling those wacky Americans which way 'round I have the day and month.)

We figured they could have a "9/9/'09" party next year, too.

    etc.

Then I got a cold sweat; when I realised the parties would end on "12/12/'12"...
Get up, a get-get, get down.

If they won't believe all the other evidence, why would some poindexter in a lab coat going on about volatile elements in some rock he *claims* came from the moon convince them?

Claiming the rocks are actually earth rocks is fair (considering there is lots of basalt) until it is pointed out that Anorthosite is not exactly common on Earth least of all in Antartica where they claim the samples were obtained and it would be really interesting to know how oceanic crust (basalt) was recovered on Antartica, did someone drill through a few miles of ice into the ocean floor? Still more telling is the mineral that is not found anywhere on Earth called Armalcolite. Then again, there is lots more scientific evidence but if they choose to close their eyes then they will never know the truth they claim to hold.

Look, I'm on your side, but some if someone is willing to deny the evidence for the moon landings they'd be willing to deny the evidence for any single claim you make about your "moon rock".

You'll say the word "anorthosite" and their eyes will glaze over -- you've lost.

If they refuse to recognize science then they are already a lost cause and nobody I would waste my time trying to convince otherwise.

Well, it would seem that they do refuse to recognize it because far before you get to the mineralogy of the moon rocks you'd already have to bypass so many scientific proofs of the moon landings.
