    Good Astronomy Jokes in WALL-E

Okay, the actual astronomy bits are at best so-so, but there's a cameo by both Sputnik and what is probably the remains of the Eagle. There are also a lot of 2001 references.

There's also the remains of one of the Apollo capsules.

I assume it's the Eagle--you know, the one people have heard of!

I figured the remains on the Moon were the Eagle that landed at Tranquility.

Yeesh. I need to go back and read my own posts. Can I argue that it's too hot for me to think clearly today?

I´d like to watch it but all the copies available in town are dubbed into Portuguese [and I prefer the original sound]. Looking forward to seeing it.

It's well worth it. I gave it a 9. (Something I also, as I recall, gave the Brazilian film I saw under the letter "C.")

Yeah. The critics are putting it in the sky, "as a metaphor of the post-industrial age..." etc, etc. The problem here is that animation [especially from Pixar] is readily labelled as kids stuff, hence the dubbing [which I really decry]. I liked the trailer.

    Oh, which one was it?

In English, it's called Central Station. I don't know the Portugese. It's about a woman who writes letters in a train station who ends up taking a little kid to find his father.

Oh, it is "Central do Brasil" in Portuguese, with Fernanda Montenegro, the first lady of the Brazilian theater and cinema. The "Central do Brasil" is [was] a Brazilian railway company [Central Brazilian Railway] and the 'Central Station' is its headquarters, in Rio de Janeiro.

Last time I saw the "junk belt" it was on the old Earth*Star Voyager made-for-tv mini-series.

Ah! Thanks for the information. I've seen films from all kinds of places while working my way through the library collection.

Um . . . WALL-E. The jokes were funny, and there were some 2001 references that amused, um, me and one other guy in the theatre, but the actual astronomy wasn't the greatest.

Just saw it with my 5 year old. Loved it! I also saw a trailer for a film coming out in the fall called "Fly me to the moon" that looks pretty cute too.

WALL-E focused on robots and technology rather than astronomy. It isn't a bad thing and I'm glad that they made the movie, but there were not that many astronomy jokes. It would be nice to see another science fiction animated film that doesn't depend so much on robots. Still, I'd take robots over talking animals...

I have no problem with robots or talking animals, provided it's done well--and this was. No, there aren't many astronomy jokes, but how many movies have any?

Well, there's Armageddon. As far as astronomy goes, that entire movie was a joke.

Though that may not be what you meant.

I enjoyed Wal-E but I didn't think it was as good as other Pixar films.

    - Oddly, while I am a sci-fi/science geek who loves this stuff in movies, it was overdone in Wal-E. Whole scenes taken up with nothing but tech stuff that didn't really enhance character development. (Such as the decontamination scene when first on-board the Axiom)
    - very little in the way of supporting character storylines. No memorable characters except the two main ones. (Think of all the fully-developed characters in Cars)

I was amused though, by the Moral Message about Westerners getting fat - a very hot, fashionable right now, and a fresh break from tired eco-cultism messages.

Wow, this movie is really getting popular.

I've seen ads for it at the local cinema since spring and the little guy reminded me so much of Number 5 that I waved it off as another "cute robot" movie.
Damn. Now I have another movie I have to watch, and I haven't even seen Kung Fu Panda yet!

Oh my, please don't say we like the looks of "Fly me to the moon"

Maybe I'm biased, but it looks utterly awful to me.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be anything coming out this year that'll rival WALL-E for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, unless there's something coming out of Japan that I don't know about. Space Chimps and Fly Me to the Moon both look simply awful.

I disagree with the moral message you think there is. Especially the western part. The people on the Axiom were fat dumb and happy because they were supposed to be fat dumb and happy.

The remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is even more dangerous. "Earth lives if you die" or something to that effect.

I liked the "Look, the star is out" joke on light pollution in Madagascar.

Also, later on, when the are on the island, one of the animals looks at the stars and goes "It's like billions and billions of helicopters."

What's the policy on thread necromancy?

Anyway, I just saw this movie and loved it! I even laughed at the silly childish gags like WALL-E thinking a bra was a form of binoculars.

I absolutely loved the Axiom. If I ever get morbidly obese, I want to go there.
