"Corner Gas"- the most unfunny tv comedy ever?

Anyone watch "Corner Gas" on CTV? Why is this show still on the air. It simply is not funny. Must be a Canadian content thingee.

I've seen a couple episodes and found it funny. Not out-loud uproarious, but certainly humorous.

I'm with JamesBrown. You must've seen the Tribute to Canadien Heroes episode.

Born and bred American. But I'm South Dakotan, which is almost North Dakotan, which is almost Canadian.

Never heard of it, but if it's in the Red Green mold I'd probably enjoy it.

I grew up just south of the border myself and watched CTV as a kid evenings when the signal was good from London (Ont.)

I enjoy Corner Gas. It isn't the greatest thing out there, but it has its moments.

I find it funny enough. May not be everyone's cup of tea, so be it, what one likes is a personal preference. It's still on, due to it's ratings (they happened to be good enough, WGN(?) picked it up in the US). As has been announced for some time, come fall, it is going into it's final season.

Someone should do a show called Final Season. Each episode would feature the same characters doing the last installment of a long-running ficticious program. The whole point would be they would act as though the audience understood all the in-jokes and backstory from the last five years. Every week a different series ending from a different series.

    I love this idea!

Too bad no one will ever make it, because you would need new actors every week.

No, you'd use the same actors every week. That would be part of the absurdity.

Think of all the situations that you'd have to create but never use, but only refer back to...the writers would die first.

I didn't say it would be easy (although I doubt it would be all that hard; truth isn't necessary, just verisimilitude). On the oither hand, could it be any worse than having to watch that obnoxious George character on Seinfeld reruns?

That's not as bad as watching "him" on Curb Your Enthusiasm. I like your idea, I'm saying, it would just be expensive, sorta like that house made of molars.

I think Corner Gas is quite a funny show, actually. Smalltown Canadian life. There was an epsiode where one of the characters was repelling mosquitos (without insect repellent) and no one could figure out why, so everyone would stand close to him or ask him for an escort somewhere. Hilarious if you've ever been to a place in Saskatchewan or Northern Ontario, but not so much in downtown Toronto I suppose.

There's also quite a bit of fairly subtle Canadian content on the show.

There's a funnier show called "Made In Canada" (CBC production) starring Rick Mercer. Hilarious, it was a pitty when Mercer decided to stop doing it

I will say that the show is a bit of a through-back to more innocent times....so that is a good quality in this day and age

Well, I'd throw my vote in the "One of the most un-funny comedies ever aired" hat, if that helps. But live and let live... there's plenty of shows I enjoy that many people dislike. That's the advantage of having 4094328 channels, or however many cable's up to now.

Alright! I've been waiting a week for this!

Mr/Miss Banquo posted this on the second day of my self imposed banning and pretty much confirmed I can't lurk here without running my mouth, figuratively speaking. Had to stop coming back until the banning was over.

Now that said, yes the humor is a bit dry but what the heck, that's what remotes and Nickelodeon Channel are there for. So you shouldn't feel too desolate and understimulated. Don't worry, I just checked, they still air Spongebob, though if you need something more cerebral there is still the Grim Adventures of Mandy and Bill. That show is quite hilarious, but might be over the heads of "some people". (C'mon "The Call Center of Cthulu" was a classic but over the top for most young'uns.)

Now as a counter argument, the dead pan IS part of the humor. Like this exchange between the "village idiot" Hank who thinks he's having prophetic dreams and the main character Brett.

Hank: I dreamed about your mother last night!

Brett: (Pause) You have five seconds to make my skin stop crawling.

In that dead pan of his.

Sure nothing blew up, nobody showed a boob, and all the "naughtiness" was implied, but to grown ups subtle is refreshing once in a while.

(Okay, the over-the-shoulder readers seem to think this is hostile. No ill intent is meant.)

There's nothing wrong with dry humor... I like Best in Show and For Your Consideration, which I consider to be very dry humor. Thing is, it still has to be good humor.

But in fairness to Corner Gas, I only watched about 30 seconds of the show, and probably didn't give it a fair shake as 99% of the shows on the channel it was on (WGN here, not the Canadian channel) are worse than garbage. I still give it my vote for worst 30 seconds of a show I've ever seen.

Hey Fazor, here's a clip on YouTube for you.

Probably how half of the voting south of the border is made...
