Talking 13 yr. old corrects NASA on asteroid Apophis.

Hey, this kid was smart enough to steal my idea from a BA thread I started way back in 2006. ...about Apophis possibly hitting our man-made satellites...and changing course. Obviously he reads BA.

From this article Mar 15, 2008 about the kid: http://www.physorg.com/news127499715.html
"The schoolboy took into consideration the risk of Apophis running into one or more of the 40,000 satellites orbiting the earth....if the asteroid hits a satellite it will change its trajectory..."

From my thread here in June 2006- 1st post:
    http://www.bautforum.com/astronomy/4...les-earth.html

...seriously, that's close enough to take out a satellite (or two), and at such a high incoming velocity, alter the asteroid's course..." - Gsquare

Dang kid's been reading my old posts and sending them to NASA.....you never know who's out there listening and learning.

Next time maybe you guys ought listen up ....so there.(razz, razz)

    G^2

P.S. ( I know there's another article out there of NASA claiming the kid's prediction won't happen.....but I guess we'll just have to see).

The kid got it wrong. Previously discussed here (among other places):

Its trajectory isn't right to hit a satellite, and if it did, it is too massive to be affected.

I say there is an invisible elf in my backyard. How do you prove that I am wrong?

Yes, AFP sounded like the Pravda for a moment with that piece of info. Of course they never bothered to acknowledge the boo boo.

Gsquare.Interesting that the plagiarism is brushed off...like so much Hollywood theft.
You were right on the line with Maxwell's equations predicting "c" too. Also overlooked. pete.

Thanks Pete; you recognized that too. I was poking fun on this post; ..but as you noted, I was seriously more surprised about them not understanding the value of c from Maxwell eqns. Even after I was so pointed about it.... It went right over their heads.....

....but I think that was more just from innocent ignorance of first year college physics than from anything intentional. I usually just leave it alone if they don't get it.....sometimes later it sinks in.

'Eta C' brought it up again after I did....with apparently the same null response.

Oh well; you can lead a horse to water.....

G2. You're welcome. It's the beginning of the understanding of unified field theories...that electric fields, magnetic fields, and light are all manifestations of one of the four forces in nature...electromagnetism. It is always surprising to see so many questions about gravity, SR and GR....from questioners never having associated the other three as one. Work in progress. ...pete
