Could the impact of Galileo's nuclear components cause Jupiter to combust, even theoretically, something like in the film "2010"?!

In a word, no. There's a long thread on the PX page that goes into this. Basically, the Pu in the RTG cannot support chain reactions and even if it could, the amount in it is infinitesimal compared to the mass of Jupiter. So rest easy, Jupiter will continute to orbit the sun (or another celestial body if you must insist :-? ) for millenia to come.
(edited to add link)
Until the Jupiterians activate the super engine they've been building and play bumper planets with the rest of the solar system.![]()
Jupiter DOES orbit the sun, which itself orbits the Earth, Tycho-luvva! ](*,)
So at some point Jupiter would be between the Sun and the Earth? :-kOriginally Posted by Yul
How does that relate to your original question?Originally Posted by Yul
As to jupiter combusting - combustion reactions involve free oxygen which Jupiter doesn't have. So the answer is definitely no.
This is being discussed in another thread, and the link is in the first reply above. Locked.
