I'm really big into backpacking. Few things are an equal experience to getting yourself somewhere remote with everything you need for your stay, under your own power. I also love star gazing. Amateur Astronomer almost seems too presumptuous a title for my endeavors, but never the less the spirit of inquiry is there, and so, my search for vantage points to observe and inquire.
I live in central Virginia, and I've recently become aware of just how intrusive the surrounding cities are of our view of the night sky. I used to think that out at my parents house, about 13 mi. outside the nearest city I had an uninhibited view of the night sky. Then I started reading about people who travel to remote locations to escape light pollution and hear about the vastly more detailed observations that can be had there.
So, my question is: How can I find information about the best locations nearest me to escape light pollution?
