Exclamation Jupiter + GRS + Ganymede + Io + Animation!

    Hi all

On the morning of the 19th March I had the best seeing i've had this year and captured loads of data which I've only just finished processing.

The seeing started out average when Jupiter was only 37° but improved throughout the 2 hours of the session when Jupiter rose to 60° right before dawn, and the seeing was excellent! Transparency was mostly good throughout, but dew on the mirrors reduced transparency in the last few runs and the last avis of the session had to be recorded at 15fps.

A 14-frame animation of the 2 hours can be downloaded here (1.1mb gif):

Jupiter + GRS + Ganymede + Io Animation

Attached are 4 images from the session, separated by approx 30 minutes each. Captured at 30fps with the DMK21AU04 and my 12" newt.

    Thanks for looking.

    Mike,

You just keep raising the bar! The animation is awesome. You can even see how the seeing changed over time. The individual shots show detail that we only learned existed with Voyager.

    Thanks for sharing!!!

That is pretty cool. And good idea running it backwards rather than just jumping back to frame 1.

The last two are very nice, good Ganymed detail too. Sure is nice having good seeing and that high elevation.

I've only had seeing that allowed me to see detail on Ganymede a few times. Fantastic animation. BTW, at dawn Jupiter is 9.5 degrees up for me. I doubt I'll be seeing much on it for a while!

Mike, this is a masterful piece of work. Surface detail on Ganymede is an incredible challenge for any ground based scope and being able to see the changing resolution with altitude and improved seeing is fantastic. You seem to have marvelous control over your system as well in terms of temperature change and tube turbulance. Just a joy to behold.

    Kind regards
    Matt
